Consumer Surgery Guide

All surgeries are performed under complete sterile conditions. This includes sterile and autoclaved instruments, gloves, caps, masks, and gowns all designed for individual use to help prevent infections. We perform pre-surgical blood work to reduce many of the risks and complications that may arise during an anestetic procedure. Our hospital offers IV Catherization which enhances the safety of anestetic procedures by maintaining blood pressure, insuring hydration levels, and flushing the anesthetic agents from the body, aiding in recovery time. We use the safest anesthesia (isoflourane-a gas), a pulse oximeter (to measure the heart rate and oxygen levels in the blood), and a surgical assistant to monitor the procedure and ensure the safety of your pet throughout the surgery. The majority of our routine anesthesia procedures are able to go home the same day the procedure is performed. We do this so you can be with your pet, aiding them during their recovery.

The following steps are all part of every anesthetic procedure in our clinic:
  • IV Catheterization: Every pet deserves an IV catheter with any anesthetic procedure. No anesthetic procedure is considered "routine". This is why the IV catheter is important as an emergency port to the body as well as for the administration of fluid therapy. Good anesthesia isn't just about life or death. Our goal is to ensure the best outcome for each patient. Our hospital practices fluid therapy during all anesthetic procedures for quite a few reasons including maintaining hydration, expanding vascular volume, maintaining blood pressure, and ensuring tissue perfusion. Fluid therapy during anesthesia provides the insurance we need for the best possible results during surgery and post-operatively.
  • Warm water circulating pad: This helps to maintain your pets body temperature the entire time they are under anesthesia.
  • Monitoring: Oxygen level and heart rate are measured with a pulse oximeter and respiration is constantly monitored. Personal measures by staff members are taken and recorded in the patients' chart every 10 minutes including temperature, respiration rate, pulse and current condition.
  • Customized Drugs: No two patients are exactly alike. Protocol is tailored to each individual patient based on pre anesthetic risk assessment. Isoflourane gas is run during surgery to maintain your pets comfort under anesthesia.
  • Recovery: When "waking up" from anesthesia pets have a harder time controlling their body temperature. During your pets recovery their temperature is monitored often. This is why they are placed on heated bedding and "tucked in" warm and cozy. Your pets comfort during this process is of #1 priority. We want them to wake up happy and alert, not in pain or disoriented.
